The ASTM or\u00a0American Society for Testing and Materials.<\/strong><\/p>\n Roofing slate standards are set by the ASTM International, an independent standards organization. Since 1957 the ASTM has established a consensus for building material standards. The\u00a0ASTM C406<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is the world-wide\u00a0\u201cStandard Specification for Roofing Slate\u201d<\/strong><\/em>. It addresses material characteristics and physical properties of the roofing slate, among other things that are important for testing. There are three tests used for grading slate:<\/p>\n Based on these three tests, the ASTM can specify which of\u00a0the following three grades the roofing slate falls into\u00a0 (dependent on geographic location and environmental exposure):<\/p>\n SlateTec Lightweight Slate Roofs\u00a0use only high quality S1 Grade roofing slate.
