Slate roof cost is highly depended on multiple factors. Roofing jobs, in general, are normally priced by the ‘square’ which is a unit of measurement.  One square is one hundred square feet of the roof deck. An average home can range anywhere from 15 squares to well over 100 squares in size, while some commercial projects can be over 1000 squares. A price quote will typically contain at least three components; the cost of shipping, the cost per square of materials, and the cost per square for the labor. Once you have those three numbers you will have an idea of the total cost per square, of natural slate roof installation.

The cost of labor for a slate roof installation varies, depending on the things like the roofer/contractor, location, climate, as well as how intricate the roof is. On a new construction project, the labor might be lower than on a reroofing project because there is no old roof material to tear off and dispose of.  Also, if the roof has a steep pitch and /or is hard to access requiring scaffolding, that can increase the cost of installation of a slate roof as well. The time it takes to install a square of a slate roof is generally a little higher than other types of roofing because slate is heavier and there is more detailed work involved. On average, a high-quality slate roof will cost about double the cost of a wood shake/ concrete tile roof and three to four times more than an asphalt shingle roof.
